CAD from a brief

MCP · in development

A server for design, drafting and engineering work. You describe the task to an assistant in a chat, and the server turns it into a brief, builds the model in CAD programs in several variants and returns ready files.

An MCP server is a connection that lets the AI in a chat use a service: it calls the right tool on its own and gets the result back.

How it will work

From a chat message to files

Shown on one part, a bracket for a shelf. Parameters, masses and file names are examples: the server is still in development.

  1. You describe the task in plain words, as you would to a fabricator. The assistant passes it to the MCP server, and the call shows up as a line in the chat.

  2. The server breaks the task down into parameters. Change any of them and the model is recalculated.

  3. From the brief the server builds the model in several variants, each with an approximate mass and amount of metal.

  4. The chosen variant arrives as files: a 3D model, a flat pattern for laser cutting and a drawing.

A bracket for a wall shelf, 20 kg load, 3 mm steel, fixed with two screws

Assistant

I’m passing the task to the “CAD from a brief” server: it will collect the data and build the model.

MCPcad_brief.build_modeldone

task: “shelf bracket”, load: 20 kg, material: steel, thickness: 3 mm, fasteners: 2 screws

02

Brief data

Appears once the server has parsed the task

20 kg from the brief
Material St3 steel from the brief
Thickness 3 mm from the brief
Fasteners 2 screws Ø5 into the wall from the brief
Overall size 120 × 100 × 40 mm calculated

Change the load or thickness and the model will be recalculated.

The rib is pressed right into the bend, so there are no separate parts.

Files in the chat

Files arrive once you pick a variant

  • bracket-a.step

3D model that opens in popular CAD programs

  • bracket-a.dxf

Flat pattern for laser cutting: outline and holes

  • bracket-a.pdf

Dimensioned drawing for approval and printing

The files arrive right in the chat. From there they go to a CAD program, a machine or the client.

What it will do

Four jobs of the server

  1. 01

    Understand the task in words

Dimensions, load, material and fasteners can be described the way you would in conversation. If something is missing, the assistant will ask.

  2. 02

    Assemble the brief

The task parameters go into one table. You can see what came from the brief and what was calculated.

  3. 03

    Build variants

Several models of the same part, so you can compare the look, mass and material use before production.

  4. 04

    Deliver files

The model, flat pattern and drawing in common formats that popular CAD programs open.

Who it’s for

People who make things

  • Furniture makers

Brackets, supports and hardware for a specific order: sketch out the part and get a drawing straight away.

  • Engineers

Rough variants of a part from the spec, so you don’t start from a blank sheet.

  • Production

Flat patterns for laser cutting and the amount of metal before a job goes into work.

  • Designers

The shape of an object in several variants, handy for discussing with a client.

Status

In development

The server is still in development, and we are not giving a launch date. The demo above shows how it is designed to work: one part as an example, approximate numbers.

If you have a task it would be worth testing on, tell us about it.
